In a campaign stop in New Hampshire Chris Dodd–our state’s senior U.S. Senator and a Democratic candidate for president–said he opposes same-sex “marriage:”

Dodd, who opposed a constitutional amendment to limit marriage to man-woman unions, said he supports civil unions, but not gay marriage. Asked afterward what he sees as the difference, he said: “I don’t think probably much in people’s minds. If you’re allowing that, all the protections you have there, you’ve covered it.”

Earlier this year I was interviewed about Sen. Dodd’s record on family issues:

The family advocate also does not consider the senator a “friend of the family” because of a long history of being “very far to the left” on social issues. Wolfgang makes his case. “He has a 75 percent approval rating from NARAL [Pro-Choice America], the pro-abortion lobby in Washington, DC,” he begins. “In the 109th Congress he had a 100 percent approval rating from Human Rights Campaign, which is the big pro-gay marriage lobby down in Washington,” he continues, adding that Dodd also has voted to keep partial-birth abortion legal.

“And he also opposes the Marriage Protection Amendment,” notes the Institute spokesman. According to Wolfgang, Dodd would rather the issue of same-sex “marriage” be decided by the courts than by the people.

Nevertheless, an FIC e-mail alert last June spoke positively of Dodd’s absence from a Senate vote on the MPA. That alert may have helped provoke pro same-sex “marriage” anger towards Dodd. From an article quoted in a June 22 post on this blog:

¨We were very disappointed that he wasn´t there for the vote, and we got a lot of calls and e-mails from our members,¨ Stanback said. She did not know if Dodd was trying to make himself more acceptable to conservative voters, she said. ¨If that were the case I would be very disappointed — because this was an easy vote.¨

Stanback said she planned to request a meeting with Dodd, not only about the amendment vote but also to seek his support for a change in state law that would allow same-sex marriage.

Based on Dodd’s recent comments it sounds as if our opponents did not get what they wanted out of that meeting. It says something about the political weakness of the pro same-sex “marriage” cause when even a Senator as culturally left as Chris Dodd refuses to embrace it.

Ho hum. The Federal government doesn’t issue marriage licenses, but they do offer certain benefits to married couples. And Dodd supports the full raft of Federal marriage benefits being offered to partners in marriage or in civil unions.

What’s “left” about Dodd is that he’s willing to think of these issues in terms of his own kids and use his sense of empathy to engage in America’s tradition of expanding social justice. Right-wing christianists and their anti-sex ed, anti-gay tolerance agenda prefer to act as if homosexuality a) doesn’t exist and b) any signs of it can be “cured” out of their children by restricting their access to information and applying physical punishment.

Dodd might not hold the exact same opinions that I do, but since he’s thinking about these things in terms of reality here on earth — and is trying to bring some justice to a culturally persecuted group — I don’t hold that against him.

Wow, there went my support for Dodd’s presidential campaign. What a disappointment!

“— and is trying to bring some justice to a culturally persecuted group —”

Oh, you must mean the middle income family, traditional marriage and people who seek the freedom of expression with open and public displays of Judeo-Christian faith, who currently are under attack by the liberal, radical homosexual, Godless Culture.
