The Marriage Definition Amendment Initiative

The 2006/2008 Marriage Definition Initiative is a joint project of the Family Institute of Connecticut , Family Institute of Connecticut Action, and Family Institute of Connecticut Action Committee.

2006 begins a pivotal time for Connecticut families: perhaps the most pivotal year in a generation. Across the country, marriage is under attack, particularly in the courts. Twenty states have successfully turned to their own constitutions to protect marriage from activist judges and well-funded interest groups. The 2006/2008 Marriage Definition Initiative is designed to lead an effort here in Connecticut to protect marriage in this critical time. We believe that t he best opportunity for protecting the definition of marriage is passage of an amendment to the state constitution.

The Marriage Definition Initiative centers around rallying Connecticut residents to support a constitutional convention this November, using the one opportunity Connecticut residents have every twenty years for direct input into their Constitution.

While we believe the campaign will result in many benefits for the pro-family agenda, including getting family-friendly state legislators elected, increased public awareness on critical family issues, and development of a grass-roots network of pro-family groups, the goal of the Marriage Definition Initiative is: To obtain a majority "yes" vote for a constitutional convention in November 2006 or November 2008 and, through that convention, secure an amendment to the Connecticut State Constitution defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

The goals of the Initiative are as follows:

Develop a campaign to educate Connecticut residents on:

  • The status of marriage and other family-related issues in the state.
  • The opportunity presented by the convention.
  • The voting records of state legislators and candidates on these critical issues.
  • Legal and political developments in these areas.

We also seek to:

  • Get family-friendly state legislators elected and apply pressure to compel legislators and candidates to make public and clear their position on this issue.
  • In the process of the campaign, increase overall public awareness on critical family issues.
  • Develop a coalition of like-minded groups and volunteer resources to support these efforts and promote a pro-family agenda.
