The Fortnight for Freedom is over but the Family Institute of Connecticut’s 2012 Religious Liberty Tour is just getting started. The Waterbury Republican-American today front-paged my letter to the editor as the “Opinion of the Day:”

The July 3 article “Catholics denounce law,” on the Supreme Court upholding Obamacare, quotes Maria Zoe, director of communications for the Archdiocese of Hartford, as saying “the legal battle may be over” and goes on to report that “at issue” is the Health and Human Services mandate that will force employers — including religious institutions — to pay for and provide abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilizations through their health insurance, even if it violates their beliefs.

In fact, the HHS mandate was not “at issue” in the Supreme Court decision, and the legal battle to declare it unconstitutional is not over. The Supreme Court ruling upheld the constitutionality of ObamaCare, reinterpreting the individual mandate as a tax, in a way that did not touch at all on the First Amendment issues involving the HHS Mandate. Some 43 Catholic institutions, as well as other entities, have filed lawsuits against the HHS Mandate and those lawsuits are still moving forward.

The public education battle against this unprecedented attack on religious liberty also continues. The Archdiocese of Hartford has asked the Family Institute of Connecticut to conduct a speaking tour about the HHS Mandate in state churches and I have now spoken at about 15 houses of worship over the last four months. I will be speaking again at St. Joseph Church in Winsted on July 10, Southbury Baptist Church on July 22, St. Augustine Church in Seymour on July 26 and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury on August 1.
