St Mary’s Hospital Foundation’s Dorothy Hamill Women Fore Women Golf Tournament, which supports a Breast Screening Program that provides free mammograms for nearly 200 low-income and uninsured women, has been thrown a punch. The Connecticut affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure has decided to cut its recurring donation to the cause this year. Last year, Komen granted St. Mary’s $54,110 to support the women among us who are in need of health screenings. This year, the group will not receive a penny.

Komen accounts this unfortunate occurrence to their recent decline in donations, which can largely be attributed to the controversy surrounding Komen’s funding, defunding and refunding the giant abortion provider Planned Parenthood. The question remains, why does Komen continue to support funding for an organization that has nothing to do with the health of women in receiving breast cancer screenings, when it clearly cannot afford to help a program closest to their presumed cause? Anne Morris, executive director of Komen Connecticut, argues that such a decision involving the pro-abortion organization occurred at the national level, “We really need to get past that and we need to get back to the mission of saving lives and ending breast cancer.” If saving lives is truly their mission, why support a group that is directly opposed to such a philosophy and backhand one that directly supports it?

With the decline in income and the loss of jobs that have been spreading like wildfire in this debilitating economy, local surgeons and radiologists note that the amount of women receiving mammograms has diminished. “Sometimes these women will have a breast cancer and I just wonder how long it has been sitting there,” says Dr. Beth Sieling, a surgical breast specialist in Southbury.

Due to Komen’s distressing response, Women Fore Women may not be in a financial position this year to help out as many women in dire need as they had planned on. The inconsistencies witnessed over the past several months among the Komen organization need to be addressed and ironed out before such disappointment and alarm occur again in the future. Perhap Komen should consider why kowtowing to political correctness is more important to them than their stated cause of saving women’s lives.
