MORE ON TUESDAY’S PRIMARIES

The big story in Tuesday’s state primaries is the one you’re not hearing about: pro-family Rep. Minnie Gonzalez (D-Hartford) defeated another effort by pro same-sex unions Mayor Eddie Perez to purge her from the legislature’s Democratic caucus. And she did it with help from FIC Action Committee (FICAC).

On July 27 FICAC sent an e-mail alert to over 100 pro-family Hartford voters encouraging them to vote for Minnie. We also provided information on how to volunteer for her campaign and supported her efforts financially. On Tuesday she won her race with 74 percent of the vote, according to the Courant:

“You guys think I won a race against [pro same-sex “marriage” candidate] Frank DeJesus?” [Minnie] said. “I was not running against Frank DeJesus. I was running against the mayor. One more time we tell the mayor, `We need a mayor, not a dictator.’ He doesn’t decide things in our community.”

Mayor Perez seems to have forgotten the wisdom of his own Nov. 4, 2004 Courant op-ed, “Kerry Lost the Values Vote,” in which the Mayor warned that “to regain status as the national majority party, [Democrats] must be willing to embrace those for whom faith in God is a key component of civic participation.” Rather than following his own advice, Mayor Perez sided with pro same-sex “marriage” activists who told Minnie after her courageous vote against same-sex unions that “we’ll be sure that you’re out” at the next election.

But instead of her defeat, Tuesday’s election provided a big victory for Minnie and a counter-witness to the media’s celebration of the Democratic Party’s leftward drift.

In fact, we were working “behind the scenes” with pro-family legislative candidates at polling places in key districts Tuesday. We met Lieberman voters disgusted by a Michael Schiavo campaign appearance for Lamont and Lamont voters opposed to the Iraq War and same-sex “marriage.”

Minnie’s victory Tuesday—and our own experiences—show that there is a bi-partisan, multicultural majority of pro-family voters who can be activated on Election Day…if we do the necessary work to make it happen.
