STATE’S POLITICIANS VOTE ANTI-FAMILY, PART 1
July 19th, 2006 by Peter
The Marriage Protection Amendment (MPA) received 187 votes in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, 10 more than last time. But all five of Connecticut’s representatives voted against it.
Indeed, all New England’s Congressmen voted against it except for one:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley of New Hampshire was the only New Englander to vote for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage Tuesday…
“I support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, which was intended to ensure that same-sex marriages would not be recognized under federal law,” Bradley said in a statement.
“However, because court rulings have threatened the legitimacy of DOMA by allowing same-sex marriages, I believe we should protect traditional marriage by ensuring that marriage is defined as between one man and one woman,” he said.
Even the recent Connecticut court ruling against same-sex “marriage” spoke of the supposed “looming inequity” of the federal DOMA. It may just be a matter of time before same-sex “marriage” supporters find an activist federal judge who is willing to say the same thing.
This is why our state’s congressional delegation must come to understand—as Rep. Bradley does—that passing the MPA is the only way to assure that the issue will be decided by the people, not the courts.
